Happy October, Creatives! And part of that October happiness is FALL WRITING FRENZY hosted by the wonderful kidlit duo, Kaitlyn Sanchez and Lydia Lukidis. For more on the contest or to read the other fall-tasting entries, click HERE.
Recap: Fall Writing Frenzy is a kidlit contest. The task is to write a kid-friendly story in 200 words based on one of fourteen fall images. My photo selection is below.
My entry was inspired by my own battle with Food Allergies which includes tree nuts, peanuts, and soy. These are the biggest allergens that affect children trick or treating.
Sage’s Teal Halloween
In her sparkly costume
Sage marched down the street.
She arrived at house one,
with a loud trick-or-treat.
They handed out candy.
Sage wished for a bite.
But she knew if she did
her cheeks would turn bright.
The next house had cider.
Sage wished for a drop.
But she knew if she did
her stomach would flop.
House number three had
popcorn aplenty.
And that’s when Sage realized
“But, I can’t have any.”
Sage turned to her mother,
“There’s no treats for me.
Halloween is no fun
with a food allergy.”
“Let’s try one more house.
The teal pumpkins look fun.”
“Okay,” agreed Sage, “but
after this house, I’m done.”
Sage crept up the stairs
and squealed in delight.
Fun toys filled the basket,
not a sweet treat in sight.
Maybe trick-or-treating
wasn’t the worst,
and on next Halloween
this house would be first.
I hope you enjoyed this entry. If you have a little one with Food Allergies (or have Food Allergies yourself) I would love for the comments to be a space you feel comfortable sharing. Thank you for reading. Until next time. Stay safe and spooky, y’all!
The Teal Pumpkin Project raises food allergy awareness and offering the option of non-food trinkets and toys in a separate bowl to make Halloween safer and more inclusive for all trick-or-treaters. To learn about the Teal Pumpkin Project click HERE.
What a wonderful way to boost awareness for a cause close to your heart. Love the spirit of the project and this piece. Great job, Brittany! Good luck to you.

Nice job, Brittany! Great point (and writing!) about the challenges of trick or treating with food (or other) allergies! And a great reminder (to me) to make sure I have a teal pumpkin and options so that all are welcome at our door! 🙂

Chocolate can be expensive and is gone in a flash. Pencils, toys, etc last much longer!

I find vacations tough too. I was thrilled during my trip to Disney World. There allergen menu is by far the best I have ever seen.
Wishing holiday strength to you and the little one!

Loved the rhythm and rhyme and especially the theme! Bravo! We don’t get trick-or-treaters where we live now, but I had fun pencils, stickers and toys years ago just to combat the sugar overload. 🙂 Little did I know back then I may have made someone’s night for other reasons!

Oh I love this, Brittany! My little ones have both had issues with certain foods (intolerances that they’ve slowly adapted to) so we’re always mindful when it comes to food at parties and celebrations. Brilliant that you were able to raise an important issue through this fun contest! ❤

Thanks for reading! Although my food allergies didn’t really affect me until I was a teen, I have been as frustrated as Sage. This is a story that I needed to hear.

This is a novel way to spend Halloween trick or treating. I had planned to give out glow sticks but worried about little ones trying to eat them as tubes of juice. So I liked your story and the other ideas you came up with.
